First, let's consider a great prevention measure; sealing holes around the exterior of your house. This is know as "Exclusion".  Not a glamorous undertaking at all, it requires time and some basic hand tools in most cases. While you're at it, consider the interior... are there holes in the walls under sink cabinets where the drainage pipes pass through?  Seal those also! Steel wool is great for large holes. Also check the gaps at the corners of your garage where the door comes down. Most times those gaps can easily provide enough access for field mice.
